My name is Robert and my High Fat Low Carb success story will pale in comparison to others who have lost tons of weight, cured sicknesses or totally transformed their lives.

For most of my adult life, I tried to control my weight by exercising. I always liked working out and enjoyed running so I thought that to control my weight I just needed to exercise and didn't think much about eating. After all, I was eating "healthy" foods such as bread, potatoes, lots of fruits and vegetables and avoiding fats.

Once I started a family, there was less and less time to exercise (it's hard to justify going to a gym when you have a wife, little kids and 1.5 jobs). In my early 30s, I would start working out several times a year in the basement either using an elliptical or doing workouts such as Insanity. Once I started working out for a few weeks, weight would slowly start to come down but when I stopped, it would start going up again.

Towards the end of 2013, I read a blog post by Karl Denninger about his success with eating low carb high fat:

That got me interested so I did some research on LCHF and found DietDoctor:

Eat real foods such as meat, fish, eggs, above ground vegetables and natural fats when you're hungry as much as you need to get satisfied. No calorie counting or measuring portions. This made sense but wasn't easy to accept. Bread was my main food pretty much since I started eating solid foods and I thought that I couldn't live without it and potatoes were always part of dinner. I also didn't think I could drink tea or coffee without sugar and stay away from chocolates or other sweets.

I decided to give it a try anyways and I've been eating high fat low carbohydrate ever since. People around me say that I'm on a diet but I don't look at it as diet anymore. There are just certain things that I choose to eat and other things that I don't want to it. It's now part of my lifestyle and I'm not planning on eating the way I used to.

It was tough for me to stay away from sugar during the first year so sometimes I would start eating things such as chocolates or ice cream and it would put me in a cycle where I would keep eating those things for days. Those destructive cravings are easier to control now after 2 years of eating mostly high fat low carb.

Sometimes, I’ll still eat things that are full of carbs or sugar, especially ice cream, chocolates or drink alcohol but the cravings the next day are a lot easier to resist now.

I was never grossly overweight but since I started eating high fat low carb, after initially dropping about 10 lbs, my weight has been steady or slowly falling almost without exercising:

Towards the end of 2015, I got better at avoiding ice cream and chocolates and at the beginning of 2016 I slowly started working out so that's why there is a drop in weight over the last few months.

Currently, I'm close to the weight that I was 15 years ago, when I was 22. I started keeping track of my weight in Jan 2001 when I weighed 203 lbs. This was the heaviest I've been in my life and I got there by eating Burger King for dinner for several months. Over the next 6 months or so, I did heavy cardio workouts pretty much 5 times a week and that's what got my weight to about 170 lbs in 2001.

Working out is great for certain things but what I learned is that most people will fail when trying to use it to control their weight. I know that I kept failing when trying to control my weight by exercising and I'm pretty sure that if I ate as I did 2 years ago and exercised as little as I did over those 2 years, that weight line during that timeframe would be going up instead of down.

I started this forum to help educate people about benefits of eating high fat low carb, help motivate those that are struggling in their journey (including myself) and to make like-minded friends.

I was able to dig up some pictures that I took from before I started eating HFLC so I put them together because they tell a lot better story about my attempts at controlling weight by exercising and what eating high fat low carb did for me. The first picture from 4/12/2010 is when my weight started approaching 200 lbs (which used to happen a few times a year) and I decided that it's time to start working out.

The one from 6/12/2010 is after 2 months of working out 3-5 times a week. The 3rd one from 8/29/2011 was after I spent some time working out because my weight was raising again but I don't remember exactly how long. Last picture is from today, after eating high fat low carb for 2 years and 2 months with little exercising.

Please note that in the last picture I'm about 5 years older than the other ones:

I keep a log of when I exercise and for the first 2 years of my HFLC journey, I used elliptical machine 19 times, each time working out for 30 minutes. That's 19 times in 2 years. I didn't do any other exercising other than regular daily movement and playing with kids.

At the beginning of 2016, I promised myself that I'm going to find time to exercise more and since 1/1/16, I worked out 11 times. I'm a programmer so my job doesn't involve much moving as I sit in front of a computer all day. Those results from 2016 are thanks to what I eat and not to how much I exercise.

For the last 2 months, I've been exercising regularly on average 3.5 times a week to see what it will do to my body on top of eating high fat low carb. I was planning on doing similar exercises as in 2010 but after 1 week of Insanity workouts, my knee started to hurt so I switched to lower impact exercises and elliptical machine. The intensity of the exercise wasn't always as demanding as insanity but more often than not, it was still heavy cardio workouts.

As for the results, if I look at my scale, I gained some muscle and lost some fat but I don't know how accurate this is:

When I started this little experiment 2 months ago, I thought that I'll see bigger difference in how my body looks since I'm exercising a lot more than before. I'm definitely in a better physical shape, stronger and able to push myself harder during cardio but it doesn't show up in the pictures.
